I wanted to take a moment to thank Gov. Nikki Haley for her strength and aggressive response to the attack on the S.C. Department of Revenue by an international hacker. As long as I can remember, whenever local schools or businesses have been hacked by criminals and information was stolen, the response was nothing more than sorry and good luck.
Earlier this year, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott released 13 million people’s voter information, and a majority including full Social Security numbers. His response was just to send a courier to New York and Washington, D.C., to retrieve the files. In the South Carolina Department of Revenue case, our state’s response was aggressive, helpful and thoughtful. They have given us tools to protect ourselves, including a year of free monitoring and protection for our entire lives and if our children were affected, their entire lives.
With this protection, taxpayers can receive a free copy of their credit report, credit monitoring, identity theft resolution, the option to protect minors under the family secure plan and $1 million identity theft insurance. We can use these tools and with vigilance protect ourselves from hackers who want nothing more than to make us victims.
