Editorial | Ethics Needs Action

Legislators are returning to Columbia this week from a self-imposed furlough with a number of big items to work on before the session ends this summer. We echo Gov. Nikki Haley, who hoped in a conference call with editorial writers from around the state on Thursday that they return ready to work, especially when it comes to ethics reform.

What had been a rallying point a few months ago has stagnated and ground to a halt as it navigates the legislative process. But there’s still time, if lawmakers are willing to give the issue the attention it deserves.

Action will be praised. Excuses will be severely scrutinized. We don’t always agree with Haley, but on this we wholeheartedly agree:

“Let’s get the year of ethics reform done.”
