What the Pilgrims were celebrating was escape from oppressive government. Having recently fled the British monarchy, the Pilgrims sat down for their Thanksgiving feast thankful that they’d been freed from the grip of tyrannical government.
Do you feel, this year, that this spirit of Thanksgiving has survived the centuries? I bet you don’t. Neither do I, not even a little bit.
I mean, look around …
Having decided to open on Thanksgiving evening, Wal-Mart is being forced to defend its decision to the National Labor Relations Board.
At the very same time that it hinders retail revenue, the government dictates that businesses like Wal-Mart somehow find the funds to provide “minimum wage” and health care benefits.
America arms the Middle East with billions of dollars in foreign aid and then shakes its fist when those billions are used to fight us and our Israeli allies.
In at least two states (Colorado and Washington), if you smoke marijuana you are simultaneously following state law and flouting federal law.
Along those lines, America fights a failed “war on drugs” by jailing people for marijuana use – all the while the real crisis is in regard to legal prescription painkillers.
Our own state government operates casinos out of gas stations, selling lottery tickets and saying it’s for the children. (You’re not just taking a chance, you’re giving one, you know.) Meanwhile the same state government refuses to offer clarity on video gaming, arresting some owners while overlooking others.
Veterans suffer from disease, depression, homelessness, and record unemployment. At the same time, military generals hobnob with sluts and socialites -- while federally-funded chefs and chauffeurs staff the festivities.
The Federal Reserve manipulates the financial system, massaging interest rates and forcing lending initiatives.
And then, when those manipulations fail, the feds blame and punish “the free market” – and use the failure as an excuse to introduce further market manipulation.
Illegal immigration is, well, illegal – but just about every government agency (especially welfare offices) offers services in Spanish.
But should you be unlucky enough to be arrested as an illegal immigrant, don’t expect to be deported. The government will detain you, shelter you, and feed you – for months and months – at taxpayer expense and for absolutely no reason.
The federal government says it knows it needs to get control of national debt. Yet one political party refuses to raise revenue, and the other party refuses to reduce spending.
There’s no eloquent way to say this: Public schools suck. But if you seek alternative education for your kids – private or home school – the government double-charges the tuition by not rebating the tax money you’ve paid into the public system.
I could go on, but you get the idea. America is looking less and less like the country it could have been.
