  • 'Cold stunned': Sea turtles find care at Ripley's in Myrtle Beach

Green sea turtles are rehabilitating at Ripley’s Aquarium Marine Science Building in Myrtle Beach. Sean Boyd, the senior aquarist, said Ripley’s is helping eight green sea turtles rescued from the North Carolina coast. He said the weather changed rapidly and “cold stunned” about 1,300 turtles causing them to become lethargic, lose body temperature and possibly sick. Although some of the turtles died, he said, many were rescued and several facilities are participating in the rehabilitation. Ripley’s is helping with the eight and once they gain a few more pounds, are cleared of any illness and barnacles scraped off, Boyd said, the turtles will be transported to Florida where they will be released in warmer water. Boyd said it should take two weeks to a month to complete the rehabilitation.
