Newsmakers | Myrtle Beach-area students graduation, earn scholarships

• Shawntavia Hasty of Conway graduated from the University of South Carolina Upstate during spring commencement.
• National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently announced approximately 1,600 additional winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by colleges and universities. These Merit Scholar designees join approximately 2,500 other college-sponsored award recipients who were announced in late May. They include Laura Tindall Ouverson of Murrells Inlet; Alessandro Berloffa of Myrtle Beach; and Jerry A. Schexnayder III of Myrtle Beach.
• Danielle M. Ives of the Scholars Academy and Socastee High School was named a National Merit Scholarship winner and received a $2,500 scholarship underwritten by the Norfolk Southern Foundation. Ives plans to study political science and may apply her award at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university.
• Jendayi Mariama Brooks-Flemister of Loris High School received a National Achievement Scholarship. Throughout the nation, 700 winners were selected from an initial pool of 1,600 Semifinalists to receive this one-time scholarship of $2,500 that recognizes academically promising African American students. Brooks-Flemister plans to study writing as she continues her education.
