National History Day announced the teachers selected to receive the Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award for their state. The teachers selected have shown outstanding creativity, commitment, and inspiration in developing student interest in history. Each state winner is awarded $500, and is eligible for the National Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award. Two national winners, announced on June 19, will receive $10,000.
Adam Powley, a teacher at HCS Early College High School in Conway, was selected as one of the two state winners. “This award signifies the high level of engagement, critical thinking, and civic education that my students have received due to the successful integration of NHD techniques,” said Powley. “For three years, I have seen students’ lives positively affected through this competition as they mature while creating historic projects. While this award will feature my name, there is no better symbol of the collaborative effort between my students, their families, and myself.”
Middle and high school teachers are nominated by their administrators, peers or self for the award. Each participating state is allowed to select one high school and one middle school teachers to receive the state award and consideration for the national award.
