An Horry County Schools steering committee is scheduled to meet two days next week to discuss design options for elementary/intermediate and middle school prototypes.
The group will meet Wednesday and Thursday from 2-8 p.m. in the media center at River Oaks Elementary School in Myrtle Beach to discuss design ideas gathered from tours of different schools.
Some committee members, including Horry County school board members, district officials and principals, toured five schools in Houston last month to see how certain design features work. Another group was scheduled to tour Dillon Middle School Friday afternoon.
Board Vice Chairman Neil James was on the Houston tour, and said the group saw various security layouts and different school features, but each person came away with a different perspective.
“I anticipate we’ll sit down and talk about the things we thought were very useful for both an elementary and middle school, and get a better idea of what we like,” James said.
Board Chairman Joe DeFeo said there had been thoughts that this process would be finished in June, but he’s not sure that will happen. The meetings will allow the group to put the details together to what could be closer to a final proposal, he said.
DeFeo said the real funding discussion will occur at the next board meeting May 12, where he expects there will be a “committee of the whole” vote on the design and budget. The vote will indicate where board members stand on the issues, but its outcome is not binding.
