There could be a new chairman of the Horry County School Board in 2020.
Ken Richardson is running for chairman of the Horry County Schools Board of Education, a position currently held by Joe DeFeo.
Richardson grew up in the Conway school system and owned Fowler Motors until 2009.
He serves as a member of the Horry-Georgetown Technical College Area Commission after being appointed in 1998. He was the chairman of the commission between 2000 and 2014.

His current appointment on the commission runs through 2019, but he doesn’t know if he’ll finish the term.
... it’s time for a change in leadership with The Horry County School Board.
Richardson told The Sun News Tuesday that he sees a lot of negative coverage of the school board in the media.
On his campaign Facebook page, Richardson wrote that he thinks “it’s time for a change in leadership with The Horry County School Board.”
He said Wednesday that he wanted to bring accountability and enthusiasm to the board and says his experience at HGTC makes the transition to the school board a “lateral” move.
“It seems like lately when they they have a school board meeting, it seems like they spend the first 15 minutes of a meeting rehashing why they can’t answer construction questions or the pay raise or whatever it might be,” he said.
If I do not run, it’s possible I may support him.
Joe DeFeo, Horry County school board chairman
But Richardson doesn’t blame DeFeo personally for what he described as a lack of moral.
“I don’t really know that Joe DeFeo is the problem,” he said. “Sometimes when you’re on the board and you’re the chairman, you’re only as good as the people around you.”
DeFeo said three years is too far away for him to make a decision on whether or not he will run again.
“Basically, I’ve talked to Ken Richardson online and we’ll get together to meet sometime soon,” DeFeo said. “If I do not run, it’s possible I may support him. It depends on who else runs.”
Richardson said he hopes DeFeo supports his campaign.
