A man is dead after a shooting occurred at Flintlake apartments late Thursday night, according to Darris Fowler, deputy coroner with Horry County.
Brian Stortzum, 32, died after being shot by an Horry County police officer. Fowler said the cause of Stortzum’s death is pending due to the ongoing investigation.
Horry County police officers responded to a domestic dispute at 630 East Flintlake Court around 11 p.m. Thursday where a man with a gun was allegedly threatening his girlfriend while her three children were there, according to Lt. Raul Denis, spokesman with Horry County police.
Denis said the man had physically assaulted his girlfriend before police arrived. The woman’s three children were in the home at the time of the incident, and officers were afraid the man would shoot their mother, authorities said.

Police demanded the man drop the gun, but the man refused and continued to threaten the family and was then shot and killed by an officer, Denis said.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating this incident at the request of Horry County Police Chief Saundra Rhodes. SLED is the lead agency in the investigation. SLED representatives could not be reached for comment Friday afternoon.
“The officer has been placed on administrative leave during the investigation, which is common practice,” Denis said.
The officer, 47, came to Horry County police from another agency and has 10 years of law enforcement experience, Denis said, but he was unsure if the officer had ever been involved in a shooting incident before last night.
Brittany Clark, property manager of Flintlake Apartments, did not want to comment “out of respect for the family,” she said.
The recent incident was the 17th officer-involved shooting investigated by SLED in Horry County in the last 10 years, according to SLED records.
An autopsy was conducted Friday morning, according to Fowler.
