A Myrtle Beach man was charged with attempted murder in connection with a woman being attacked with a machete on Christmas Day in Horry County, authorities said.
Fidencio Arguello Sarmiento, 40, was booked into J. Reuben Long Detention Center at 12:02 p.m. Tuesday on a charge of attempted murder and two unrelated failure to appear summons, according to jail records.
Sarmiento was being held at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday on $5,000 bond on the attempted murder charge and $150 each on the failure to appear charges, jail records showed.
Horry County police were called at 9 a.m. Dec. 25 to 6700 Enterprise Road for a man using a machete on a woman, according to a police report. Officers found a 34-year-old woman on the couch with cuts to her arms and hands.
The victim was taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center for treatment, police said. While there and using a translator, police learned that Sarmiento had threatened the woman with a machete before the incident.
The victim said she went into a bedroom to collect money from someone inside that room to pay the television bill and when she came out Sarmiento was upset, according to the report. The victim said he punched her before he pulled the machete from the rear of his pants and swung it at her.
The victim said she would not cooperate with police about the incident because she feared retaliation from Sarmiento and his family, according to the report.
