An 18-year-old man reported he was threatened and had his cigarettes stolen by a North Carolina man while he picked up trash on the beach, according to a police report.
Dale Issica McCoy, 34, of Hope Mills, N.C., was charged with strong armed robbery after officers were called at 12:45 a.m. Saturday to the 100 block of 23rd Avenue North for a robbery on the beach, police said.
The victim told officers he was walking with his girlfriend on the beach when they saw an empty beer can floating in the surf so he picked it up to dispose of it, according to the report. The man said they found another beer, but it was full, so he left it on the beach.
A few minutes later a man, identified as McCoy, approached the couple and accused the victim of stealing his beer and cigarettes, the victim told police in the report. The victim said McCoy threatened to hit him if he didn’t give McCoy his cigarettes.
The victim gave McCoy his cigarettes, which he said he purchased before arriving at the beach, according to the report. McCoy told police that he approached the couple and asked if they took his items and they said yes and gave the cigarettes back.
McCoy said he did not threaten or try to hit the victim during the incident.
