A 50-year-old man is in custody in North Carolina pending extradition to face charges he set fire to a home in the Causey community, authorities said.

Dalan Strickland, 50 of Fairbluff, N.C., was being held to face charges related to the Thursday morning fire at a home on Sand Plant Road in Horry County, according to a police report. He was taken into custody by Columbus County, N.C., authorities after Horry County emergency officials were called about 7:30 a.m. Thursday to the blaze.

A 44-year-old woman called emergency dispatchers to report her house was on fire and that Strickland had told her that “she would die before the night was over,” according to the report. The woman said she and a 21-year-old woman climbed out of a window to escape the blaze, which destroyed the home.

Damage was estimated at $50,000 to the single family home and fire crews said the blaze was an act of arson, according to the report. The two women, who said they woke to the smoke, were not hurt during the fire.

Police used the county’s dog tracking team to search for Strickland, who was seen by a passerby walking away from the burning home, according to the report. Columbus County authorities took him into custody there.

Detectives continue to investigate the blaze and a report of domestic violence before the incident.
