A 24-year-old Atlantic Beach man remains in custody Sunday on charges of fatally striking a bicyclist with a car early Sunday.
Herminio Vasquez Mendoza, 33, died on the scene, Horry County deputy coroner Tamara Willard said. Willard said an autopsy showed the cause of death was multiple trauma.
Demetrius Cordell Hall, 24, of Atlantic Beach was arrested Saturday and is charged with felony driving under the influence charges resulting in death, said North Myrtle Beach spokesman Pat Dowling. He was being held on $25,000 bond Sunday afternoon.
According to Dowling, Mendoza was heading south on U.S. 17 South in the 3400 block when Hall struck him while driving a Nissan. Police said Hall continued to drive south for a few blocks before walking back toward the scene of the crash, where he encountered the police.
Police gave Hall a field sobriety test and found him to be intoxicated. He was driven to Seacoast Medical Center where a blood sample also was taken. The results of the blood test were not given as of Sunday afternoon.
