A 3-year-old North Carolina boy drowned Saturday while at a family birthday party in Loris, authorities said.

Carter Myles Mincey was pronounced dead at Loris McLeod Hospital while being treated at the emergency room, Horry County Coroner Robert Edge said.

The boy from Chadbourn, N.C., was in town with family members to attend a birthday party and had been swimming in the pool, but the group had gotten out and went inside the home, Edge said. The boy had disappeared from inside the home and was found in the pool.

Family members retrieved him and began CPR until EMS arrived, Edge said. An autopsy was not done.

“It’s a real unfortunate accident,” Edge said.
