A Myrtle Beach area man is charged with murder following a deadly shooting Sunday morning.
Clifford Powell, 33, is charged with murder, possession of firearms and ammunition by certain persons and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Powell was arrested by Horry County police early Sunday following a shooting on Citation Way in Broadway Station off 38th Avenue North in Myrtle Beach. Broadway Station is in a Myrtle Beach “doughnut hole” – an unincorporated area of Horry County completely surrounded by the city.
Charles Royal, 31, of Myrtle Beach was pronounced dead at Grand Strand Medical Center at about 4:30 a.m. Sunday, Horry County chief deputy coroner Tamara Willard said.
Police responded about 2:30 a.m. Sunday to the 3700 block of Citation Way for the reported shooting and found a small crowd including Excalibur security guards standing over the victim who was found laying face down on the grass near a sidewalk, according to an incident report. Police said Royal could be heard grasping for breath with a visible gunshot wound behind his right ear.
The report said numerous eyewitnesses were on scene, but details of what they saw was not provided in the document.
