Police say fatal fire in Aynor considered homicide

A 68 -year-old man died early Tuesday in a fire that is being investigated as a homicide, according to Horry County police Lt. Robert Kegler.

Horry County Fire Rescue responded to a blaze around 3 a.m. at a home on U.S. 501 in Aynor. Charles Bryant Smith was found on the near the front door, according to Horry County Deputy Coroner Tony Hendrick. Hendrick said Smith suffered some burn injuries, but he did not release a preliminary cause of death. Hendrick said the autopsy results are pending and should take 60 to 90 days. .

Based on evidence investigators found after they arrived, police decided to treat the incident as a homicide, Kegler said. He did not release details about what evidence was found. He could not say whether an accelerant was detected.
