A Surfside Beach woman was charged during the weekend with felony driving under the influence and hit and run after a bicyclist was struck from behind along U.S. 17 Business, according to authorities.

Michele Montsinger Osborne, 41, of Surfside Beach was charged with hit and run, duties of driving involved in accident with death or personal injury and felony DUI with great bodily results, according to records at J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

Osborne was booked into the jail at 7:01 a.m. Saturday and released at 6:42 p.m. that day on $30,000 bail, according to jail records.

The charges stemmed from 2:45 a.m. Saturday when authorities were called to U.S. 17 Business at Melody Lane for a bicyclist, who was struck from behind as he traveled along U.S. 17 Business, said Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins with the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Authorities learned a 1997 Jeep SUV struck the bicyclist and then left the scene, Collins said. A short time later, authorities found Osborne and took her into custody.

The bicyclist, a 37-year-old Surfside Beach man, was taken to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries. His condition on Monday was not immediately available.

The bicyclist was thrown from his bicycle, but he was not at fault in the crash, Collins said.
