A Myrtle Beach man was killed Monday morning when he was struck by a tow truck on U.S. 17 Bypass near U.S. 501, according to authorities.

Stephen D. Jarvis II, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene from internal injuries he suffered in the crash, Horry County Coroner Robert Edge said.

The southbound entrance lane onto U.S. 17 Bypass at U.S. 501 was closed for several hours while emergency crews and police were at the crash scene.

The crash was reported at 1:38 a.m. Monday on U.S. 17 Bypass between U.S. 501 and Pine Island Road, according to Myrtle Beach police.

A tow truck driver drove onto U.S. 17 Bypass from U.S. 501 and was going south when he said he saw a person in the roadway, Capt. David Knipes said. The truck driver reported he hit the brakes and swerved, but could not avoid hitting the person.

A passenger in the tow truck gave a similar account of what happened to police, Knipes said.

The crash is under investigation.

No additional detail was available late Monday.
