On Feb. 6, for the second consecutive year, Elks Lodge-2679 of Calabash, N.C., made a cash donation of $2,000 to the Waccamaw School (K-8) in Ash, N.C., to enable the school to purchase books for its Media Center.
As a Title 1 school, the books in the school’s media center are sorely outdated, and it has been in need of new hard-copy reading materials for quite some time. The school has a large population of students who often have limited access to computers, the Internet or reading materials at home, and the brunt of their learning comes from hard-copy books, said Collyn Gaffney, who teaches a literacy class at the school.
The funds for this project were acquired as a grant from the Elk’s National Foundation, the charitable arm of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, headquartered in Chicago.
