Moe’s Original Bar B Que, a staple southern eatery strewn across Alabama, Colorado and North Carolina, is opening its first South Carolina location in Pawleys Island.
Though a solid opening date isn’t yet set, the restaurant is aiming for mid-August, according to a press release.
“I hope sometime the week of the [Aug. 11],” owner Meg Lonon said by phone Thursday afternoon.
She said she and her family have been vacationing to Pawleys Island her whole life from Knoxville, Tenn., and she has been trying to find a way to move here for years.
“We finally figured it out!” she said, adding that she loves the area and thinks the Lowcountry’s laid-back vibe is a perfect fit for her new restaurant, which they built from the ground up right off U.S. 17.
“The Moe’s brand is known for its leisurely, laid-back atmosphere and we knew it would be the perfect for Pawleys Island’s way of life,” said owner Meg Lonon in a press release. “Since I have come here for vacation my whole life, I chose this location because I love the area and we have always wanted live and raise our kids here.”
Moe’s was founded in Colorado by three men from Alabama, who had a mutual interest in “BBQ, blues, college football and whiskey,” according to the restaurant’s website.
The barbecue joint will be located at 12827 Ocean Highway in Pawleys Island, between Gilman Road and Ford Road, and feature screened porches, a full bar and an open kitchen layout. The menu includes southern meats that are smoked in-house daily, such as pulled pork, smoked turkey and fried catfish, along with daily sides and desserts. “It’s going to be a family-friendly, fun place to enjoy barbecue, a beverage, hang out with your kids, watch football and hear music,” Lonon said.
Moe’s offers catering and private facility rentals for special events, along with takeout for large groups. Prices range from $9 for a sandwich with two sides, to $33.25 for a group meal. Sides go for $1.75 each, with platters (one meat, two sides, cornbread and a drink) at $10.
The restaurant has been recognized for several awards, including Top 10 Rib Joints in the U.S. by Relish and Top 10 BBQ Chains in America by USA Today.
Moe’s has 31 current locations and three planned locations, including the Pawleys Island addition.
