The Downtown Redevelopment Corp. is calling all beach volleyball lovers to sign up for a new league.
Bump Up the Boardwalk Volleyball League kicks off Saturday and will last for six weeks with a championship game on Aug. 30 – but organizer Carson Edmunds said she’s looking for more participants to sign up.
“We have very few people signed up right now,” Edmunds said Monday. “Registration may be extended and we may be able to take some people [on Saturday].”
Edmunds, who is a DRC intern, said the group wanted to provide an event that could be held downtown, while catering to locals, and saw a need for a city beach volleyball league.
Never miss a local story.
The first games begin Saturday with teams facing off weekly through Aug. 30. Games will be played four-on-four and teams can be comprised of up to eight members, to allow for substitutions. They are held on the former Myrtle Beach Pavilion site, along Ocean Boulevard between Eighth and Ninth avenues North.
She said she hopes the league also will help to bolster the businesses surrounding the former Pavilion site. Ten businesses have signed up to partner with the event, each offering to sponsor a team.
The businesses also will take turns offering food and drink specials to the league members on game days. Businesses involved include Landshark Bar & Grill, Moe Moon’s Beach Bar and Grill, Dirty Don’s Oyster Bar, 8th Ave Tiki Bar & Grill, Boardwalk Coffee House, The Bowery and Ocean Front Bar & Grill.
