The Windsor Green community in Carolina Forest will go smoke free on common property in the neighborhood beginning July 1, according to the board of directors.
The board said the decision is fueled by many factors including complaints from residents about second-hand tobacco smoke, the cost of picking up improperly discarded cigarette butts and to reduce fire hazards.
In March 2013, 110 units in 26 buildings burned to rubble leaving 190 people temporarily homeless.
Smoking will be allowed only in designated areas in front of the clubhouse, the rear of the pool and the two grilling stations.
The prohibition does not apply to the inside of units or the back porches, but includes recreation buildings, the swimming pool, landscaped common a areas, hallways, building front porches, stairwells and landings.
In response to a survey about going smoke free, 85 percent of community members who responded favored the decision, according to the board.
