Last day of school

Friday is the last day of school for students in Horry and Georgetown counties. High school graduations begin Tuesday with HCS Early College High School, while the other ceremonies in both counties occur Thursday and Friday.

Primary election debates

Two debates are being held this week sponsored by ETV and seven S.C. newspapers, including The Sun News.

• Thursday 7-8 p.m. – Republican candidates for lieutenant governor
• Saturday 7-8 p.m. – Republican candidates for U.S. Senate seat held by GOP incumbent Lindsey Graham

Absentee voting deadline

Voters have until 5 p.m. June 9 to vote absentee in person for next week’s statewide primary elections. Those voting absentee in person may do so at the Horry County Voters Registration and Elections department at 1515 Fourth Ave. in Conway.

Voters have until June 10 to vote absentee by mail. Those voting by mail must have requested an application from the voter registration office and will receive an absentee ballot. Ballots must be returned to the voter registration office by 7 p.m. June 10.

Hurricane evacuation exercise

The S.C. Department of Public Safety and anumber of other state and local agencies, will conduct a hurricane evacuation exercise Tuesday throughout the state to test lane reversal plans.

No lanes actually will be reversed during the drill, which is expected to last from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The exercise should not interfere with traffic, but drivers will see activity on the shoulders and aerial units flying surveillance routes.

In Horry County, equipment and personnel will be seen on U.S. 501 from S.C. 544 and to U.S. 378, as well as between S.C. 22 and the Marion Bypass.

NBA Finals

The NBA Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat begins this week. Theseries tips off at 9 p.m. Thursday and will be televised by ABC.

Stanley Cup finals

The NHL’s Stanley Cup finals begins 8 p.m. Wednesday on NBC.

The New York Rangers will represent the Eastern Conference, while the winner of Sunday’s late game between the Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Blackhawks will represent the West.
