Calabash firefighters responded to a fire at 7:31 a.m. Saturday for a Carolina Shores home that was on fire.
The department reports the fire occurred at No. 5 Court 11, Carolina Shores. Firefighters say the first unit on the scene reported heavy fire and smoke showing from a single story residence, and heard screams coming from the house next door, which was endangered by the intense flames, according to a press release.
Firefighters rescued a wheelchair-bound resident from No. 7 Court 11, and she was transported to a local hospital for evaluation, according to the department.
The fire was brought under control in 30 minutes, but the home is a total loss, firefighters state. The owner of the house was not at home, and no one was injured in the blaze. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Brunswick County Fire Marshall's office.
The fire was first reported by a neighbor who heard two loud pops and saw heavy smoke from the next court over. A second call came into 911 via the next door neighbor's medical alert device.
Calabash firefighters were assisted by Grissettown & Longwood and Sunset Beach fire departments as well as Brunswick and Calabash EMS units.
