Plans to construct permanent public restroom facilities in an alley across from the SkyWheel in downtown Myrtle Beach might be delayed.
The Myrtle Beach Downtown Redevelopment Corp. opened bids for permanent restrooms Friday, but the lone bid came in much higher than budgeted, DRC executive director David Sebok said. The group hoped to open the new restrooms by mid-June.
The only bid submitted estimated construction of restroom facilities to cost $346,916. The DRC budgeted $211,375.
“We’re still negotiating with that bidder and evaluating it, and if we need to re-bid it, we will,” Sebok said. “I’d be surprised if we can get the bid down to a level that we think is appropriate.”
The bathroom would sit in the alley between Ocean Boulevard and Withers Alley in downtown Myrtle Beach, between 10th and 12th avenues North.
Sebok suggested permanent restrooms during last year’s DRC retreat and worked with the city’s Cultural and Leisure Services to determine the best location that would allow them to replace the Plyler Park restroom trailer.
The trailer in Plyler Park has three stalls – one for men, one for women and for handicapped use. Once a permanent restroom is in use the trailer in Plyler Park would be refurbished and placed in another downtown location that would be determined later.
The trailer at Eighth Avenue North and Ocean Boulevard also will be refurbished, but would remain where it is, Sebok said. The trailers have been used for the last four seasons.
