Television and radio personality and U.S. Navy Veteran Montel Williams will be this year’s grand marshal at Myrtle Beach’s Memorial Day weekend parade, the city announced Wednesday.

Williams hosted “The Montel Williams Show” for 17 years after serving in the Navy for 15 years, according to a press release from the city.

“Committee members sought a celebrity with a military background and Montel Williams is a dynamic choice,” said city spokesman Mark Kruea in a press release. “Not only did he serve, but he still supports our veterans and their families, has traveled to Afghanistan to meet with front-line troops, and looks for ways to give back to the military.”

The parade, which will take place at 10:30 a.m. May 24, is the highlight of a month’s worth of activities for the city’s Military Appreciation Days.

As grand marshal, Williams will lead the parade on Ocean Boulevard and mingle with people at the Military Appreciation Days Family Picnic that same day.

Previous grand marshals include astronaut Buzz Aldrin, Sen. John McCain and former Pittsburgh Steeler and U.S. Army veteran Rocky Bleier.

Another highlight this year is the return of a traveling version of the Vietnam Memorial Wall. The Wall that Heals will be on display 24 hour a day from May 14 to 18, at Grand Park near The Market Common.
