Temperatures in the 20s and 30s will force the placement of steel girders at the U.S. 17 Bypass and S.C. 707 bridge project to take two nights instead of the planned one night, a county official said.
“We’re completing the southbound bridge,” said Lisa Bourcier, spokeswoman for Horry County. “Because of the cold, it’s probably going to take two nights to complete all the girders for the southbound lane.”
The $121.7 million project, known locally as the back gate construction because of its proximity to the old back gate of the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, will include an overpass that eliminates the stoplight at the Farrow Parkway/S.C. 707 intersection, and keeps U.S. 17 Bypass traffic moving. It is estimated that about 70,000 cars and trucks pass through that intersection during peak season.
In December, crews took two nights to put up two of the five girders. Construction workers’ plan for moving the girders laterally did not work and the girders could not be connected properly, Bourcier said at the time. The crew came back with new equipment the next night and set the two southbound girders.
From 10 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday, motorists will be able to travel north and south on U.S. 17 Bypass, however no left turns will be allowed from the bypass at the intersection of S.C. 707 and Farrow Parkway, according to a press release from the county. Motorists traveling on S.C. 707 and Farrow Parkway when approaching the intersection will not be allowed to travel through the intersection or make left turns, the release states.
The recommended access for south bound U.S. 17 Bypass and S.C. 707 wanting to go east on Farrow Parkway would be to use the U.S. 17/S.C. 544 interchange, according to the release. The recommended access for north bound U.S. 17 and Farrow Parkway wanting to go west on S.C. 707 would be to use the Fantasy Harbour/U.S. 17 interchange. The alternative detours/routes are placed on signage throughout the vicinity of the project, according to the release.
Once this work is complete the same operation and traffic patterns will be done when the steel girders are set for the northbound bridge, which will be announced at a later date, Bourcier said.
