Ohio-based Ithaca Gun Company will expand its manufacturing operations in the southeast with a new location in Horry County, according to a press release Wednesday from Myrtle Beach Regional Economic Development Corporation president Brad Lofton.
Lofton said the project announced by the firearms manufacturer will include a capital investment of approximately $6.7 million and create 120 new jobs. The jobs will include machine operators, gunsmiths, engineers, and assemblers that are expected to earn wages “significantly higher than the Horry County average wage,” according to Lofton.
Ithaca Gun is the second gun manufacturer to announce plans for Horry County this year. During the summer PTR Industries, a Connecticut gun manufacturer, announced its move and the company is upfitting its new headquarters at the Cool Springs Industrial Park near Aynor.
PTR is has agreed to have 145 total employees in Horry County by the end of 2016.“We are delighted to be a part of the growing firearms manufacturing industry in the Myrtle Beach area,” Mike Farrell, with Ithaca Gun Company said in a press release.
Never miss a local story.
Ithaca Gun Company is known for the manufacturing of multiple gauge shotguns and the Model 1911 pistol.
The company will construct a 20,000-square-foot facility at the Cool Springs Business Park near Aynor, beside PTR industries, according to the press release.
It is not clear when work will begin on the company’s building or when the company is expected to begin operating, but in the press release Farrell said he expects to be under production in 2014.
According to the release, the company chose Horry County because of the area’s labor force, proximity to technical colleges in Florence and Conway, the states stance on the Second Amendment and the quality of life in Myrtle Beach.
In the release State Rep. Mike Ryhal said, “This was a tremendous effort by the EDC and adds another solid employer to Horry County ... The addition of 120 jobs will have a ripple effect throughout our area and benefit all of us.”
