Fatal motorcycle crash closes U.S. 17 for hours in Myrtle Beach

A crash involving a motorcycle and SUV Friday on U.S. 17 Bypass near Seaboard Commons shopping center killed one and sent three people to the hospital, according to Myrtle Beach Police..

The wreck occurred about 2 p.m. and cause the highway to be shut down for hours in both directions between the shopping center which houses a Target, Lowes and Planet Fitness and 21st Avenue North.

Killed was 43-year-old Thomas Weeks III of Blacksburg, Va., according to the Horry County Coroner’s office.

Police said Weeks was on the motorcycle with another person. It was unclear Friday who was driving.

The motorcycle was headed north on the Bypass when the driver apparently lost control and ended up in the southbound lane where a collision with the SUV occurred, according to Myrtle Beach Police Capt. David Knipes.

Knipes said a woman who was on the bike and two people from the SUV, which had Maryland license plates, were taken to the hospital.Police are looking for witnesses to the crash. Anyone who may have seen what happened can call 918-1382.

Knipes was not sure how the motorcyclist lost control, or if speeding was a factor.

Northbound traffic was diverted into the Seaboard Commons shopping center to Seaboard Street, with a couple lanes opening just after 3 p.m.

Southbound lanes were stopped at 21st Avenue North, and the highway wasn’t open completely until after 4 p.m.

The condition of the other three people involved in the wreck was unavailable.
