Horry County to honor Gen. Vaught

The Horry County Council will commemorate the life of Gen. James Vaught who died Sept. 20 from an apparent drowning.

The council will honor Vaught’s life during its meeting, which starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Horry County Government and Justice Center in Conway.

Myrtle Beach candidates forum

The Northwoods Property Owners Association is sponsoring a candidates forum for those running for Myrtle Beach City Council and mayor at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Faith Presbyterian Church, located at 805 79th Ave. in Myrtle Beach.

The forum is open to the public. The election will be held from Nov. 5.

Overcrowding at St. James

Horry County school board could settle on a new solution to the overcrowding in Horry County Schools’ St. James attendance area at its meeting at 6 p.m. Monday at the District office, 335 Four Mile Road in Conway.

Breast Cancer Awareness

During the month of October, national public service organizations, professional medical associations and government agencies work together to promote breast cancer awareness, share information on the disease and provide greater access to services.

Throughout the month there are a number of events promoting breast cancer awareness. See the full list on page A11.

Postseason baseball

The MLB postseason kicks off Monday with a one-game playoff between Tampa Bay and Texas. The teams needed a tiebreaker game for the final wild card spot in the American League. The winner will play another one-game playoff against Cleveland on Wednesday with entry into the divisional round on the line. Cincinnati and Pittsburgh play the NL’s one-game playoff Tuesday.

The NL’s two divisional series begin Thursday and the AL’s begin Friday.
