College football kickoff
College football starts this week and Coastal Carolina, South Carolina and Clemson are all in action.
The Gamecocks kick off the season by hosting North Carolina at 6 p.m. Thursday on ESPN. The Chants play at South Carolina State at 6 p.m. Saturday and Clemson has a showdown with Georgia later in the day at 8 p.m. on ESPN.
Area high school football teams Myrtle Beach and Conway are in action over the weekend in the Derrick Law Firm Kickoff Classic, which will feature four games pitting S.C. squads against N.C. teams.
Myrtle Beach plays Richmond County at 7:30 p.m. in Friday’s lone game. On Saturday, Conway caps the slate with a contest against New Hanover at 8 p.m. Hoggard-Irmo (1 p.m.) and Southeast Raleigh-Dutch Fork (4:30 p.m.) are the early games.
Pelicans hold final homestand
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans will open their final homestand Saturday before their third straight year in the Carolina League playoffs, which start Sept. 4.
The games, at TicketReturn.com Field, are at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, and 6:05 p.m. Sunday and Sept. 2

Boogie and BBQ
The eighth annual Beach, Boogie & BBQ Festival will take place Friday through Sunday on the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base in and around Grand Park.
Admission is free and features a variety of activities including a barbecue contest, free screenings for children who could qualify for treatment at a Shriners Hospital for Children and live entertainment.
