Syndicated humor columnist and New York Times best-selling author Celia Rivenbark will speak at First Book's Fall Author Luncheon Oct. 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Prestwick Country Club in Myrtle Beach.
Rivenbark will speak on her newest book, “Rude Bitches Make Me Tired,” at the country club, located at 1001 Links Road. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased from board members. In addition to the meal, a meet-and-greet will take place with the author, whose book will be available for purchase and signing.
Rivenbark writes a weekly humor column for The Sun News and has authored seven books with titles such as “You Don’t Sweat Much for a Fat Girl” and “You Can’t Drink All Day If You Don’t Start in the Morning.” Her books have been nominated for the James Thurber Prize, and “Stop Dressing Your Six-Year-Old Like a Skank” was an Entertainment Weekly best title in 2006.
Proceeds from the luncheon will benefit First Book of Horry County, an organization that provides new books for children in need. The local organization is part of First Book’s national network of volunteer-led advisory boards and the only one in South Carolina. For every $25 donation, First Book is able to provide 10 children’s books through its national publishing partners.
Some 50,000 books have been distributed in Horry County to date. The local organization is part of First Book’s national network of volunteer-led advisory boards in communities across the country, but with 25.3 percent of children (more than 7,000) living in households of poverty, many more are needed.
A recent impact study of First Book found that students demonstrating a “high interest” in reading nearly tripled after receiving books from First Book.
The luncheon will also feature drawings for special door prizes such as restaurant gift certificates, weekend hotel stays, custom jewelry, golf packages, original artwork and more.
Tickets may also be purchased at AmeriPrise Financial Services office, 1601 N. Oak St., Myrtle Beach, Suite 402. Call 843-448-9110. Tickets must be purchased in advance; they will not be sold at the door.
