Most cake shops would consider a chance to showcase their wares on TV a treat, but for a local store, this time it’s about sweet revenge.
Coccadotts Cake Shop will do batter battle Sunday against three other confectionary creators on Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars” for a $10,000 prize. Coccadotts, which has stores on Sayebrook Parkway in Myrtle Beach as well as Clifton, N.Y.., and Albany, N.Y., is making its second appearance on the popular telecast, hoping to do much better than an early elimination the first go-round after salt was inadvertently added to the batter rather than baking soda.
On the show, four bakers compete in three elimination rounds until a winner is crowned.
“I think we had to go back,” said company founder Rachel Cocca-Dott, who owns homes in New York and Myrtle Beach. “For us, this is a redemption episode. We had to show our fans and our friends that we can make cupcakes.”
The shop isn’t just doing that on the television, however. The public in each of the three towns is invited to a viewing party that will feature free food, prizes, entertainment and, of course, plenty of cupcakes. The Myrtle Beach party will be at 101 Fantasy Harbour Boulevard, near the former Hard Rock Park.
“We are planning for some big crowds at all locations,” Cocca-Dott’s business partner Matt O’Connor, who bakes with her on Sunday’s show, said in a press release. “We’ll have some giveaways, live radio remotes, area cheerleaders and more. We invite everyone to join us to commemorate this moment.”
The party is just one way Cocca-Dott hopes to give back to residents of the Grand Strand, which she said she grows more fond of every day.
Her father had moved to the area and when she and her husband visited, they immediately were smitten. They also noticed that at the time there wasn’t a cupcake shop in the area so opening one made perfect sense, as did building a house.
The Myrtle Beach store is operated by Michelle Cocca, Rachel’s stepmother.
“We just fell in love with the area,” Cocca-Dott said.
Sunday’s show, which airs at 8 p.m. on Food Network, will have the competitors vying for a chance to serve cupcakes at guest judge Tiffani Thiessen’s star-studded birthday party. Thiessen starred in “Saved By The Bell” and “Beverly Hills 90210.”
“We are truly blessed to have the support from our loyal customers, employees and local community,” Cocca-Dott said. “We look forward to sharing the excitement this coming Sunday with our family, friends and fans.”
