The Horry County Police Department was recognized this week for their efforts in organizing a community cleanup.
A resolution was approved during Tuesday’s Horry County Council meeting that commended the department for spearheading the Feb. 16 Socastee community cleanup.
Police officers were assisted by students and faculty from Socastee High School and worked in conjunction with Keep Horry County Beautiful. All told, 145 volunteers gave their time.
Ten acres of parks, five miles of roadway, a half-mile of trails, three boat landings and four illegal dumpsites were cleaned, according to the resolution.
That equaled 80 30-gallon bags, 192 13-gallon bags, 100 orange trash bags and three dumpsters.
Police Chief Saundra Rhodes told the council that every officer who participated deserved the recognition, and that it truly was a rewarding experience.
The council was appreciative of the efforts, but ultimately wished they weren’t needed.
“If everybody in this county would quit littering, we wouldn’t have to go out and do this extra work,” said Councilman Paul Prince.
