Video: Planned Parenthood official argues that pro-choice extends to baby of a botched abortion
Yes, it can be argued that this is a gotcha question about something that rarely happens. Nevertheless, the answer the woman seems to give in the video is a disturbing one. (If anyone can find other sources, please add them in the comments box.)
The answer is easy and simple: If there is a baby on the table struggling to breath and clinging to life, medical professionals have a duty to save him. Period. At that moment, there is no longer a question about where the woman's right ends and the baby's begins - because they are two, wholly separate people at that point. You don't have to touch the woman to save the baby.
I know some might even argue that a Jehovah's Witness can decline care for her sick child if the only way to save the child is through a blood transfusion. I'm not even comfortable with allowing a parent to make that type of decision - even though I am a parent.
Never miss a local story.
But in the case at the video, if a baby is born, the baby is a full, complete human being and must be treated as such. There is nothing to argue about at that point.
How often does it happen? Once a year? I don't know. But the number hardly seems to matter.
