Go hog hunting on North Island
The S.C. Department of Natural Resources is allowing hog hunts with dogs for three two-day periods beginning this week on North Island in Georgetown County.
The hunts are part of the department’s continued efforts to remove and eliminate feral hogs from North Island. The hogs have continued to multiply on the island, destroying landscape and native plants, and they are jeopardizing the nesting success of ground-nesting birds and sea turtle nests scattered along the beaches of the barrier island, according to DNR.
The hunts, which happen Friday and Saturday and Feb. 15, 16, 22 and 23 from sunrise to sunset, are part of an overall hog removal project on the Yawkey Wildlife Center.
DNR staff will periodically be on site to collect pertinent information. For more information and guidelines, contact the wildlife center at 546-6814.
