Surfside Beach police have charged two people accused of trying to break into a local head shop after the pair returned to the business hours after the break in attempt.
Police were alerted by employees of business on Tuesday that the two Conway residents who had tried to get into the store in the early-morning hours had returned to buy merchandise, said Sgt. Travis Bailey.
Police charged Daniel James Hake, 25, and Melanie Elizabeth Rutan, 18, with second-degree burglary, possession of burglary tools and criminal conspiracy.
Hake also was charged with malicious injury to personal property. He remained jailed at J. Reuben Long Detention Center under a $27,130 bail. Rutan was released Wednesday on a $20,000 bail.

Bailey said officers went to the Up in Smoke shop at 325 U.S. 17 North in Surfside Beach after someone had tried to break the glass to get in. When police arrived around 2:30 a.m., they found the glass had been shattered, but determined that no one had gone inside.
Store employees had surveillance footage of the suspects trying to break in, Bailey said.
Several hours later, at 10:30 p.m., Bailey said Hake returned to the store wearing the same clothes he had on in the surveillance video and tried to buy spice, a legal herbal incense. Rutan, he added, was driving.
Store employees called police and, Bailey said he two allegedly said they had tried to break the window and go into the store to steal spice.
