The U.S. 701 at S.C. 22 was closed for several hours Wednesday after a tractor trailer overturned spilling rocks onto the roadway, said Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins with the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The driver of the tractor trailer was injured and taken to a local hospital. Collins did not know which hospital or the extent of the injuries because the driver had been transported by emergency medical personnel before troopers arrived to begin the investigation.
The crash occurred about 1:13 p.m. Wednesday, according to the agency’s website.
Collins said the driver was exiting S.C. 22 east and heading southbound on U.S. 701 back toward Conway when the truck overturned. Troopers are still investigating, but Collins said the driver may have been traveling too fast on the exit ramp.
The roadway reopened about 5 p.m. after workers cleared the rocks that had spilled into the roadway.
Drivers in the area were being turned around because the rocks made the roadway impassable, Collins said.
A crash occurred in the same area Tuesday morning that also involved a tractor trailer.
Collins said there’s no reason to connect the incidents other than the similar location.
On Tuesday, a vehicle crashed into a tractor trailer on the eastbound S.C. 22 ramp between S.C. 319 and U.S. 701 just after 9 a.m. Collins said the vehicle was trying to travel west when the driver got on the wrong ramp and ended up on the eastbound side in the path of the tractor trailer.
Foggy conditions may have played a role in the crash, Collins said.
Both drivers were treated at area hospitals and Collins did not have information on the injuries.
