Former candidate facing felony charge sues
A former candidate for Oconee County sheriff is suing several people he says are involved in getting him arrested on an attempted kidnapping charge.
The Anderson Independent-Mail reports that James Bartee’s lawsuit accuses an informant of setting up his arrest. Bartee has denied the charge he tried to get the informant to kidnap a retired judge to prevent him from appearing at a hearing in May.
Bartee’s suit says the chief prosecutor in Oconee County conspired with her husband, who leads the county’s Republican party, and other law officers and candidates for sheriff.
Bartee withdrew from the race before the June primary.
Man killed outside of Greenville County bar
Deputies say a man was shot to death in a parking lot in Greenville County.
Investigators said officers were called to Bobby T’s for a shooting in the parking lot around 5:30 a.m. Sunday. Deputies arrived about a minute later and found a body.
Authorities say witnesses gave a description of the man who fired the shots and the vehicle he left in. Deputies say they arrested 47-year-old David Young after a short chase.
Investigators say Young is charged with murder.
An owner was killed inside the business in August. A suspect in that case is awaiting trial.
SC church destroyed by fire holds outdoor service
Members of a 252-year-old church in Newberry County held their services outdoors just four days after fire gutted the church.
St. Paul Lutheran Church took advantage of the unseasonably warm weather Sunday morning and set up folding chairs on the church’s lawn for its services.
The church near Interstate 26 in Pomaria went up in flames early Thursday morning, leaving little but its stone walls intact. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The church was founded in 1761 and still sits on the same land granted to it by King George III of England.

Rescuers were able to pull a female passenger from the water and took her to a hospital. Her condition was not known.
Authorities say the wreckage of the plane has been found. The Coast Guard helped in the search for the pilot until sundown Sunday. The search will resume Monday morning.
Names released of 4 killed in Lee County wreck
Authorities have released the names of the four people killed when a car crashed into an empty house near Sanford.
Troopers say 31-year-old Aaron Powers was driving on U.S. 421 in Broadway in Lee County around 2:30 a.m. Saturday when the car ran off the left side of the road.
Investigators say the 2006 Dodge Charger was likely speeding as it hit a mailbox and several trees before flipping over and bursting into flames when it hit the home.
Authorities say 35-year-old Katherine Powers and 33-year-old Christopher Baker, each of Broadway, and 38-year-old Rebecca Powell, of Chapin, S.C., also died in the crash.
Troopers weren’t sure about the relationship between any of the victims.
NC man charged with rape
Police charged a man Friday with an early-morning burglary and sexual assault in Carrboro.
Francisco Javier Diaz, 33, was charged with attempted first-degree rape, first-degree burglary and sexual battery, police spokesman Lt. Chris Atack reported.
Officers responded to a 911 call around 4:17 a.m. Friday in the 100 block of Fidelity Street after a man broke into a residence and sexually assaulted a 25-year-old woman, Atack reported. They searched the area and found Diaz, he said.
Atack said the woman, who they do not think is a UNC student, was not alone in her residence at the time. Her roommate was asleep in another bedroom when the man came in through a back door that may or may not have been secure, Atack said. There was no sign of forced entry and the victim woke up to find the man in her bedroom, he said.
Diaz was taken to the Orange County Jail under a $100,000 bail.
