The week ahead for the Myrtle Beach area

The 120th S.C. General Assembly will begin Tuesday in Columbia.

Topics that are scheduled to be addressed this year include hacking costs, open government, election law reform and early voting, ethics reform and Medicaid expansion.

Grab a fork: Restaurant Week on tap

Diners will be able to snag some deals or try special menu items at about a dozen Grand Strand eateries starting Thursday during S.C. Restaurant Week, which runs through Jan. 20.

About 120 restaurants across South Carolina are participating in the week, which is designed by the S.C. Restaurant and Lodging Association to showcase the state’s food offerings during what is traditionally one of the slowest times of the year.

Happy birthday, Elvis

Elvis Presley’s 78th birthday is coming up Tuesday and various parties are planned around the Grand Strand this week.

Scheduled events include:

• dinner and music at 6 p.m. Monday at The Boathouse Waterway Bar & Grill, 201 Fantasy Harbor Blvd., Myrtle Beach. Hosted by the Elvis Fan Club Myrtle Beach/Grand Strand. The events are free.
• 20th annual “Elvis Night” 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Dick’s Last Resort in Barefoot Landing. There is no cover charge for the event. Michael Sokolik Jr. will perform “Elvis – Through the Years.”

FPC Concert Series opens

The 27th year of the FPC Concert Series opens at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, 1300 N. Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach.

The first of four concerts will feature violin prodigy Benjamin Beilman accompanied by Yekwon Sunwoo on piano.
