In the last six days in Horry County, there have been five people killed in separate vehicle crashes including the most recent that occurred Monday night and involved a mo-ped driver in the Socastee area, according to authorities.
Despite the recent flurry of fatal incidents, Horry County officials have recorded 37 fatalities from Jan. 1 to Nov. 11, which is 10 fewer than the same time period last year, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol. During the same period in 2010, officials recorded 43 fatalities and 59 in 2009.
In Georgetown County, those figures are slightly less with 12 through Nov. 11; five in 2011; seven in 2010; and 15 in 2009 during the same period.
In the most recent incident, Patrick Carey, 34, of Surfside Beach was pronounced dead at 3:23 a.m. Tuesday at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Horry County Senior Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard said.
Never miss a local story.
Carey was not wearing a helmet when his mo-ped ran off the road at 10:30 p.m. Monday on Enterprise Road, which is off S.C. 707 in Socastee, said Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins with the Highway Patrol. The mo-ped ran off the road and struck a guardrail, which caused the rider to be thrown off, Collins said. Troopers are investigating the crash.
Myrtle Beach police also continue to investigate a fatality that happened about 1:30 a.m. Monday on U.S. 17 Bypass between U.S. 501 and Pine Island Road, said Capt. David Knipes.
Stephen D. Jarvis II, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene from internal injuries he suffered when he was hit by a tow truck, Horry County Coroner Robert Edge said Monday.
The truck’s driver merged onto U.S. 17 Bypass from U.S. 501 and was going south when he said he saw a person in the roadway, Knipes said. The driver reported he hit the brakes and swerved, but could not avoid hitting Jarvis. A passenger in the tow truck gave police a similar account of what happened.
No charges are expected to be filed in the crash, Knipes said Tuesday
