A young restaurant that joined the lineup of Murrells Inlet eateries is owned by a father-daughter duo with a passion for Southern food and family goodness. The Spotted Dog, while not on the Marshwalk, is across from the most well-known biker bar in the area and in an easily accessible location.
The gorgeous oak tree at the front provides ample shade for their large patio, including the fire pits, outdoor bar and little stage. Upstairs, there is more outdoor seating that still allows for a view of the stage and has fans to keep the air moving, so even on hot days, it stays quite comfortable.
Inside, The Spotted Dog has an almost rustic feel with modest decorations and a small wall dedicated to the owner’s many years as a fireman and chief. The service is friendly, which of course helps the atmosphere be even more relaxing.
Almost the entire menu is a variety of Southern dishes, such as crab cakes and barbeque. The Spotted Dog has added twists to some of the food, too, such as its version of deviled eggs that come topped with crab. Fried dishes show up aplenty, even creating a meal aptly named the Fry Basket.
Never miss a local story.
The platters consist of a protein, such as barbeque pork or shrimp, along with two sides and a small salad. If the food might be too much, there is a “petite” option which brings the meals down a few dollars as well as decreases the side to one choice. For the barbeque, guests can choose a sauce to have warmed up and topped on the meat.
Sides include red potatoes, collard greens, baked beans, grits, fruit salad and more. The broccoli casserole and mac and cheese come with crumbled crackers on top, adding a nice salty crunch to your meal. The Spotted Dog also provides meals for kids that come with applesauce and fries.
The sizes of the meals are decent, with a half-pound of meat on the plate when you order an entrée. Some might say the prices are a little on the high side, especially without a lunch menu.
However, The Spotted Dog does have a daily Happy Hour with discounted beers, plus snacks that change Tuesday through Friday during this time.
The restaurant also has $9 specials for every day it’s open, which is a great way to experience the different flavors, such as Tuesday’s chicken bog, or Friday’s fish fry. Every Thursday evening is team trivia night and therefore usually pretty filled with friends having fun and testing their knowledge. The Spotted Dog also has live music occasionally on its outdoor patio, and will hopefully have more as this puppy picks up speed.
