Have a taste for a salad? What about a wrap, cold sandwich, hot sandwich? Seafood? Pasta? Lunch or dinner? Eat in, take out or deliver? Want a catered party? Causeway Gourmet has all of this and more.
“Our slogan is ‘Fresh Food.’ We do everything from scratch,” said Jonathan Thurman, co-owner with his wife Dawn Fahey.
Located on the causeway before crossing the bridge to Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., the restaurant has ample parking and a welcoming atmosphere with its white railing and banisters. Once inside, the customer is faced with countless choices, including the daily special and a six-page menu.
Its signature sandwich, The Godfather, has gained prominence because of the generous amount of tender, marinated grilled sirloin topped with melted mozzarella, grilled onions and peppers with pesto mayo on a toasted hoagie. Add one of the half-dozen homemade sides, and you have a bigger-than-average meal for $8.99.
The Turkey Reuben is a tasty alternative to its Classic Reuben, and for $8.79 including a side, it’s a hearty meal.
The cole slaw, broccoli bowtie pasta and macaroni salad that we took out are extra creamy and each has a distinctive palatable flavor. The broccoli bowtie includes almonds, raisins and carrots while the macaroni salad has ham, peas and red onions. Potato salad, pasta salad and fresh fruit salad are other homemade choices.
The Specialty Salads include eight selections. At the top of the list is Salmon Power Salad. Fresh salmon and bacon with avocado and other vegetables comprise this masterpiece for $12.99. Choose one of the six homemade dressings from red wine honey vinaigrette to fiery Thai.

A popular entrée is Shrimp and Grits. The shrimp is sautéed in special sauce served over stone ground yellow grits and costs $15.99.
Soups, a Kids’ Menu, beer and wine are all available at this eatery. Delivery is after 5 p.m. with a $3 charge. The owner will send the 10-page catering menu via email on request.
The dining room has limited seating, but it is large enough to accommodate groups of 10-12, leaving room for smaller parties. The staff are friendly and ensure customers are satisfied. Original art hangs throughout the dining room and is available for purchase.
The byword here is incredible—in the size of the servings and delicious food.
