Horry County police released additional details in a deadly attack that occurred this weekend at home near Conway.
Christopher Leron Cooper, 21, is being held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center on a charge of murder in the death of was charged with murder following the death of 22-year-old Kendall Williams. Both men are from Mullins.
A background check through the State Law Enforcement Division showed Cooper has no prior arrests or criminal charges.
Horry County police were called about 4:15 a.m. Sunday to a home located on Chanticleer Village Drive for an assault, said Sgt. Robert Kegler. Officers found Williams, who was unconscious and not breathing, in the house.
Williams died about an hour later while being treated at Conway Medical Center. Horry County Deputy Coroner Tony Hendrick said an autopsy was performed later that day, but details about his death have not been released.
The men, who are not students at Coastal Carolina University, were attending a party at the home, Kegler said. After an investigation, detectives determined Cooper attacked Williams and he fell during the fight and was repeatedly kicked and punched.
Cooper was taken into police custody when officers arrived at the house, Kegler said. Witnesses told police that Williams was asleep on a couch in the home's living room when Cooper assaulted him.
It was unclear why the altercation began, Kegler said.
Preliminary autopsy results showed a weapon was not involved in the incident, Hendrick said. Officials also are awaiting toxicology results, which could take several weeks, before releasing Williams’ cause of death.
