I’m thrilled to say that the summer beer fest extravaganza is starting this weekend. Yes, that’s right, there is going to be something beer-related happening just about every week(end) for the next two months! I’ve already shared how excited I am about the Extreme Beer Fest going on at Atlas Tap House this Saturday, Aug. 6 at 3 p.m., but as Extreme as this fest is going to be, that’s just the beginning!
While many places are hosting other smaller scale events, such as House of Blues’ Sierra Nevada “Hopped Up” tap takeover on Aug. 18, the next big-time fest is Grumpy Monk’s 2nd Annual Monk-A-Polooza.
On Saturday, Aug. 27 beginning at 3 p.m., The Grumpy Monk’s parking lot will become a beer drinker’s paradise. The festival is boasting 30 breweries and will be pouring over 200 beers that you won’t want to miss!
Last year, the fest went all day with live music and and giveaways through out the evening, including overnight stays for brewery tours and even a kayak. The festival donated a portion of the proceeds to the Horry County Fire Department’s relief fund, and had a fantastic turnout. In fact, the turnout was so awesome that it was difficult to find parking with easy access to the event, so make sure you show up early!
Never miss a local story.
I dropped into Grumpy Monk recently and spoke with Manger/Owner Chris Evans again to find out what’s new and exciting for this years Monk-A-Polooza: “Lot’s more giveaways and more overnight trips! This year we are focusing in more on the local breweries of North and South Carolina, like Low Tide Brewing (John’s Island, S.C.) and Swamp Cabbage Brewing Company (Columbia, S.C.),” Chris said. He also went on to add Legal Remedy Brewing (Rock Hill, S.C.), Conquest Brewing (Columbia, S.C.), Coast Brewing Company (Charleston, S.C.), and Westbrook Brewing Co. (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) to name a few. There are also a few new comers to the area like Check Six Brewing Company out of Southport N.C.
Some of the heavier hitters of the larger brewery world will also be present like Great Divide Brewing Company (Denver), Duclaw Brewing Company (Baltimore, Md.), Crown Valley Brewing (Genevieve, Mo.), Dogfish Head Brewery (Milton, Del.), and Sierra Nevada (Chico, Calif. & Fletcher, N.C.)
Speaking of “heavy hitters,” taking center stage during the fest: Inflatable Jousting to keep you entertained while you’re sipping on something like Legal Remedy’s Blueberry Saison or even your in-between bottle of water to stay hydrated!
Of course the real reason behind festivals like these is often to give thanks to the support of the community in keeping craft bars like Grumpy Monk going strong and kicking kegs! Grumpy Monk also wants to give back this year with a portion of the proceeds going towards Coastal Carolina University’s Teal 1000 program. This fund supports scholarships for local students in Horry and Georgetown counties.
It seems like this year’s Monk-A-Polooza is shaping up to be another milestone for the area with local music, competitions with prizes, giveaways, food, and of course lots of tasty brews! Can’t wait to see y’all there!
