FRIDAY & SATURDAY
Put on your red shoes and dance (the synth-soaked) blues...
New wave throwback act The Wavos, a trio featuring members from Myrtle Beach, Asheville, N.C., and New York brings its retro-minded dance party to two Grand Strand venues this weekend. You’re sure to hear hits by Depeche Mode, Simple Minds, Men Without Hats, Morrissey, The B52s, Midnight Oil, New Order, Duran Duran and Flock of Seagulls as the self-described “Men In Skirts” hold court at Pine Lakes Tavern on Friday and Island Bar and Grill (Surfside Beach location) on Saturday. There is no cover charge for either night. The dance party starts at 9 p.m. Friday at Pine Lakes Tavern and 9 p.m. Saturday at Island Bar. Pine Lakes Tavern (formerly Droopy’s) is at 5201 N. Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach. Call 449-4758. Island Bar and Grill is at 2272 Glenns Bay Road, Surfside Beach. Call 650-3157 or visit www.islandbarandgrill.com.
Never miss a local story.
And it seems the sounds - and looks - of the ‘80s are in the air...not that they ever really left our jort-sporting, airbrushed shoreline. There was a time when the raunch and roll of L.A.’s Sunset Strip ruled the music industry, spitting out a diverse slate of bands working in varous genres of hard rock, including Guns ‘N’ Roses, Motley Crue and Poison. Celebrating that excess and success comes the dubiously dubbed The Kings of Hollywood Tour eaturing a triple dose of tribute acts Appetite for Destruction (GNR), Red White & Crue (obviously a Crue homage) and Poison’d (hmm, Bret Michaels, anyone?) slated for Friday night at the House of Blues. Doors open at 7 p.m. Friday, music starts at 8. Tickets are priced like the mid-‘80s too, at $10 in advance, $13 day of show. House of Blues is at 4640 U.S. 17 S., Barefoot Landing, North Myrtle Beach. Call 272-3000 or visit www.houseofblues.com/myrtlebeach.

Oh yeah, and how could we forget the locally-brewed Quigley’s beer made on-site? Admission is free, but food and drink tickets are not, so bring your wallet.
