The Oscars are a little more than a month away and some controversy was stirred up when the nominations came out recently and the majority of the nominees for acting, like almost all of them, were by white actors and actresses. It was so evident that people like Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee took to social media to call the academy out on their apparent prejudice, with the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite.
It prompted us to ask: Does #OscarsSoWhite have any merit?
Yes it does
What is it going to take for us to realize that prejudice still exists in America? An even and fair eye needs to be analyzing the films being nominated to ensure it is representing the melting pot that is America, and the world, these days. Let it then be up to the academy to figure out which films, actors, directors and such are deserving of the highest recognition in their field.
Never miss a local story.
We’re so far from Dr. King’s dream in 2016, it’s no longer a joking matter.
No it doesn’t
Neither I nor the people I associate with pick a movie, a team, a place to eat or anything for that matter based on race. When will this race card finally be dropped? The same people saying let’s recognize there are no Blacks in the Oscars are the ones making Black and White issues.
Whether it’s Billy Crystal, Chris Rock, or Ken Jeong hosting the Oscars, I will be entertained. Many of us will be entertained, regardless of what race they represent. After all, it’s 2016 and a laugh is a laugh regardless of which man, woman, Black, or White person is responsible for the laugh.
