‘Opulent Object’ exhibit
The Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum will get color going for autumn with “The Opulent Object: Tapestries by Jon Riis with Sculpture by Richard Mafong and Mike Harrison.”
This display of luxurious, exotic objects, with more than 40 tapestries and 20 sculptures, opens with an artists reception 5:30-7:30 p.m. Oct. 3, then lasts through Jan. 5. The reception is free for museum members, otherwise $10.
Also, the “Passionate Collectors and 25 Years of Jonathan Green” exhibit opened last weekend, continuing through Dec. 29.
Admission to the museum, 3100 S. Ocean Blvd., Myrtle Beach, across from Midway Par 3 and Springmaid Beach Resort, is always free, but donations are welcome. It’s open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays, and 1-4 p.m. Sundays. Details at 238-2510 or www.myrtlebeachartmuseum.org.

Easy Escapes | Tour Bird Island reserve
The Museum of Coastal Carolina in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., will lead a guided walk Sept. 28 on the Bird Island Coastal Reserve. This barrier island, between Sunset Beach and the Little River Inlet in South Carolina, spans 1,481 acres.
To join this stroll, gather in the museum, 21 East Second St., for a short presentation by Jim Barber, who will talk about Bird Island’s history and natural resources, then participants will carpool to Sunset Beach to meet up with several Bird Island stewards, who will lead the island walk.
This event also coincides with National Take A Child Outside Week, which concludes Sept. 30.
Admission is free with museum admission: $8 for ages 13-61, $7 ages 62 and older, $6 ages 3-12, and free ages 2 and younger.
Through Jan. 4, the museum’s open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays. Weekly activities at 11 a.m. include “Animal Adventures Story Time” on Thursdays for preschoolers, and docents welcoming guests to feed residents of the touch tank such as sea stars, sea urchins, a horseshoe crab, a Florida horse conch, striped burrfish and a flounder, and more. ‘Wonderettes: Caps & Gowns’

‘Tribute to Benny Goodman’
Brunswick Community College opens its 2013-14 Performing Art Series with a “75th Anniversary Tribute to Benny Goodman” at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 30, on campus at Odell Williamson Auditorium, off U.S. 17 in Supply, N.C.
Other series concerts, all at 7:30 p.m., are:
