— The Detroit Historical Society has raised more than $21.2 million during a five-year fundraising campaign, topping a $20.1 million goal for the effort.

The announcement Thursday is being made during an event at the Detroit Historical Museum.

The "Past Forward Campaign" wrapped up June 30. It has allowed the Detroit Historical Society to do a number of things, including update the Detroit Historical Museum in Midtown and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle. It also opened the Legends Plaza at the museum.

The Detroit Historical Society also has digitized tens of thousands of artifacts, adopted a free museum admissions policy and boosted educational programming.
