Hail, lightning expected from afternoon thunderstorms in Myrtle Beach area

A line of thunderstorms moved through the Grand Strand this afternoon, dumping heaving rain frequent lightning and left some residents without power, forecasters said.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued from 12:20 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. Tuesday for portions of Horry and Georgetown counties, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, N.C.

Doppler radar showed the showers were moving about 20 mph and at 12:10 p.m. Tuesday thwy were about nine miles west of Socastee, forecasters said. The storms are moving east and could bring wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph, frequent lightning and heavy rainfall.

The storms are capable of producing hail and residents should seek shelter indoors until the storms have passed through the area, officials said.

The storms left more than 950 customers of Santee Cooper without power in the Myrtle Beach area, according to the online outage report. The outages were scattered across the Myrtle Beach area, but a large one impacted 790 customers along U.S. 17 near S.C. 544.

Customers in that area were impacted to S.C. 707 and included Big Block Road, Hidden Woods Drive, Green Bay Circle and Pennington Loop, according to the online report.

Other areas such as less than 10 customers along U.S. 501 near Carolina Forest and less than five customers were impacted in two spots along U.S. 17 in the Surfside Beach area, according to the Santee Cooper outage report.

It was unclear how long power would be out in those areas.
